Lost in Translation is the tale of a chance collision between two souls feeling trapped in their lives and lost in a foreign world. Bill Murray is endorsing a whiskey purely for the sake of the money although while enjoying the break from his wife, meanwhile Scarlett Johansson is accompanying her husband Giovanni Ribisi, a photographer. We watch the friendship between these two strangers slowly blossom into a delicate platonic romance.
I remember the premiere of Lost in Translation in London on October 28, 2003 at the Odeon Cinemas in Leicester Square. It was not long after I saw the movie and since then it has been among my 10 favourite movies. Why? I think I can give several reasons for that: possibly the two main characters - Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Also the close dialogues and transcendental conversations, and the city itself that seems to go at a different speed to that of their lives. However, and perhaps most importantly, that same month I was returning to "home" after 11 years living abroad and away from everything. All of us who have experienced periods of time abroad an alone know what the difficult moments are and have them go it alone, and the capacity that solitude, although well carried, can give you to think about the absurdity of what we fight for in life itself.
This is a movie where I believe that everyone who has felt alone outside their home understands the plots and comes to resemble them.
Among other messages that leaves us the film is the correct thing that always results in taking distance from everything to be able to see life with perspective, and in this case find yourself or let somebody to find you; Although the final decision making is never going to be simple, but at least it will be the right one.
